FC Barcelona have officially announced their withdrawal from the controversial European Super League (ESL), bringing an end to their involvement in the breakaway competition that shook European football in 2021. The decision was confirmed through an official statement released by the club on Friday.
Barcelona informed the European Super League company and all related parties in writing that they are no longer part of the project and have withdrawn from all associated agreements. With this move, the Spanish giants have distanced themselves from one of the most debated initiatives in modern football history.
The European Super League was originally launched in April 2021 by 12 elite clubs from England, Spain, and Italy, aiming to create a closed competition outside UEFA’s structure. However, the project collapsed within days due to massive backlash from fans, football authorities, players, and governing bodies such as UEFA and FIFA. English clubs quickly pulled out, followed by several others, leaving only a few teams still associated with the plan.
Barcelona, along with Real Madrid and Juventus, had continued to support the project for several years, citing financial sustainability and the need for reform in European football. However, Barcelona’s latest decision marks a significant shift in their stance.
According to sources close to the club, the move is aimed at restoring and strengthening relations with UEFA, while ensuring uninterrupted participation in major European competitions such as the Champions League.
